Review of Colonial Beach, Virginia

The area of Colonial Beach Virginia is a very depressed and somewhat unsightly. I would not recmmend this as a place to live, t may be ok for a visit, however I did not enjoy it myself. The housing is probably pretty cheap here, so if that is all that you're looking for it might be your place.

I think you need to spend more time in Colonial Beach and look at it more subjectively. We had been traveling there about 7 times a year for 10 years on our boat (2006 Sea Ray 340 Sun dancer) and we absolutely love this place. So much so that we bought a house and a golf cart and decided to retire there. The food in this town is amazing with many wonderful quaint and charming restaurants. The people here are happy, friendly and helpful. The nightlife is energetic with several venues where you can dance the night away to live bands right on the beach every weekend. Colonial Beach has the most beautiful Sunrises on the Potomac river, the most beautiful sunsets on Monroe Bay, The most dazzling night skies, and the most scenic river view you will ever see. If you are friendly to Colonial Beach she will be friendly to you. You should take another look. Spend more time there and get to know the people. Have dinner at the light house with Chef Noy, or dinner at the very small but charming Denson's Grocery where Rocky will cook you up the best steak and shrimp you ever had. If Seafood is more to your liking then look no further than the Dockside restaurant at Colonial Beach Yacht Center at the end of the point, and be sure to stay there for the Live bands on Friday and Saturday night out back at the Tiki Bar which overlooks the moon lit entrance to Monroe Bay. If you are in the mood for board walk rocking I can certainly recommend The High Tides restaurant which has a wonderful out door beach side venue with live bands every weekend. After any dinner at Colonial beach you can always get an ice cream sundae at Nancy's 1950's style soft serve wagon. This place is a gem. I can also recommend the Sea side restaurant, and the Hunan Diner if you crave chinese. In the morning you can sip fine coffee at the town coffee house which has the best macadamia nut and chocolate chip cookies that I have ever had. Also breakfast at Lenny's always hits the spot. I'm not much of a gambler, but if you are, they also have the Riverboat gambling casino right near the town pier where you can throw a line in the water and fish. After fishing, bring your chair blanket and sunscreen and relax on the white sandy beaches with your favorite book. You need to try Colonial Beach again good sir before being so out of hand dismissive. Colonial beach is a magical place with wonderful people. If you don't have fun there you aren't trying very hard.

Colonial Beach has nice sunsets, mainly because—right now—few buildings are taller than one storey. The air actually smells sweet, and the good-tasting mineral content of the water makes it feel as silky as deluxe bath balm. if you live in a city larger than a million people, I guarantee you’ve forgotten what that’s like or how full of stars the night sky is without light pollution. However, rather than chiding the commenter above, the later replies need updating. For instance, - Fine dining at Dennson’s comes in limited form as a food truck since Covid. - Chef Noy still has a good restaurant, but hasn’t been at the Lighthouse for at least 5 years. The owner of Hunan is still cooking to order distinctive versions of Asian cuisine, but it’s strictly takeout now that the dining room is no longer open. - Although a condo/hotel replaces the Boardwalk, you can still get that great Willey’s BBQ delivered from their food truck next to Hall’s Market, with its welcome fried chicken. - The Colonial Beach Brewery has perfected its art with my favorite, called Cold Beer. I also like, but must caution about, their brewed seltzer, which seems so innocent until you stand up. - Colonial Beach’s other brewery, The Icehouse, looks to be getting its kitchen nicely sorted with hotdogs, milkshakes, and a surprising reuben sandwich, available with tots [which are crispier without the works]. - Both places host weekly trivia, which is fun and a good way to know and get known. - Lenny’s has long been good for breakfast and lunch that won’t break the bank. And they’re going to try staying open for supper on weekends this summer. - My favorite new place for lunch is Games, a 70s diner with weekly half-priced steaks and burgers and a daily breakfast buffet: good, good coffee, experienced food prep with Ola’s, former chef, and puzzle rooms or pinball to boot. Try their chili and a grilled cheese with the deal for a half cup of soup and half a sandwich. Their chili is the best in town, along with their chunky milkshakes, perfect fries, and specially warmed ice cream and brownie on a mirror of chocolate sauce, topped with et cetera. - Speaking of Ola’s, New American cuisine is its new incarnation as Fire Escape; going to its soft opening this week, so I can’t tell you more right now. - My current favorite is Los Hermanos, with personable staff, gin rickeys, frozen drinks, too, and a delicious cross between French Rillettes and fresh Mexican tacos called a Quesadilla Rellena; the flavor alone will fill you up. [Have Kyle at Beach Grub hook you up for delivery.] - Delivery or pickup is also available from Huesteca, which features a friendly staff, a bar, a buffet, good Mexican, and an Impossible Burger [like the popular sandwich of the old Four Seasons restaurant, there before.] Try their Huevos Rancheros if you like Western Omelets. Virtually everything closes at 10 pm, so “dancing the night away on the beach”must refer to some other decade, like gambling does at the oft-touted Casino, which is just Off-Track-Betting ever since the hurricane. High Tides does have rock cover-bands in it’s outside sand-pit, bar, but it’s unlikely they’ll be doing Cole Porter or Benny Goodman tunes for dancing; more’s the pity, because the volume is very loud.
